MOTSMAX- I (MOTS-c or Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA Type-c) is a 23-amino acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP). It functions as a systemic metabolic signal transducer. Its intracellular pathway relies on the activation of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling cascade and the accumulation of 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide (AICAR). It promotes insulin- independent glucose disposal by actively driving the expression of GLUT4 transporters in muscle cell lines and accelerates fatty acid oxidation via the inhibition of acetyl-CoA carboxylase.
